Shipping Human Remains to Guatemala

Repatriation to Guatemala involves Guatemalan consular steps and approvals in Guatemala itself. We explain what we confirm on every case, and what families should know about government assistance before signing with a funeral home.

What to know right now

Last reviewed: November 7, 2026. Government requirements change, so we confirm them again on every case.

  • Requirements are set by the Government of Guatemala. Guatemalan consulates in the United States handle consular steps, and approvals are also needed in Guatemala itself, including from health authorities, according to reports we have seen. We confirm the current process case by case.
  • We do not publish a document list we cannot verify. We were not able to confirm a current official checklist for shipments from Florida, so we do not present one here. We obtain the current requirements from the consular authorities for each case before we quote.
  • Documents most often mentioned. Reports and consular guidance we have seen commonly mention a death certificate, a transfer or transit permit from the health authority where the death occurred, an embalming or cremation certificate, Spanish translations of English documents, and consular authentication. We treat these as questions to confirm, not as requirements.

We are not able to link a current official checklist at this time. Families can also contact the consulate directly. Fees may not be the same from month to month.

How a shipment to Guatemala is typically coordinated

  1. Choose a licensed funeral home in FloridaIt cares for your loved one, embalms or arranges cremation, and obtains the Florida death certificate and burial-transit paperwork.

  3. Prepare and authenticate the documentsThis can involve an apostille, Spanish translations and consular review. We sequence the steps so that none is repeated.

Government help with repatriation costs: ask before you sign

Guatemala has a repatriation assistance fund for some families of Guatemalan nationals, and consulates can receive assistance requests in certain situations. Reports we have seen advise that signing a contract with a funeral home before contacting the consulate can affect eligibility for that help. If you think you may qualify, ask the consulate first, before you sign or pay anything. We can still help you plan the shipping once you know your options.

Timing and cost factors

We do not publish a fixed price or number of days for Guatemala, because they depend on factors outside anyone’s control:

  • Consular processing and whatever documents and fees the authorities require.
  • The apostille, translation and authentication steps.
  • Flight availability, cargo cut-off and the arrival airport.
  • The receiving arrangements, and the onward trip inside the country.
  • Funeral home charges at both ends, airline cargo charges and document fees, which may not be the same from case to case.

How we help families with Guatemala repatriation

We coordinate the shipping side: confirming the current requirements, checking the documents, working out an available route, coordinating with the Florida funeral home and the receiving side in Guatemala, and keeping you updated. We do not have an office in Guatemala, and the funeral and burial there are carried out by the receiving funeral home.
